UFC 98 Predictions from UFC 2009: Undisputed Video Game

Seeing as how the UFC and THQ have given us such a great game with actual fighting realism; I thought it would be cool to see how tonight's fights played out in the virtual arena.

Let me start off by saying, I wasn't disappointed with the simulated fights! Lots of back and forth action, with strategies that I expect we will see tonight. For tonight's card there are 3 bouts that could be simulated: Evans vs Machida, Hughes vs Serra, and Sherk vs Edgar.

Light Heavyweight Championship
Evans vs Machida: Machida by TKO Rd 2 (1:36)

The 1st round was pretty even, with equal strikes and damage. Evans did knock Machida down early in the round, but he was not rocked and Evans couldn't take advantage of the opportunity. Machida's elusiveness and consistent leg kicks led to an opening for a right hook that sent Evans to the mat. Machida didn't hesitate and moved in with heavy ground and pound to finish off Evans. Ref stoppage due to strikes.

Co-Main Event - Welterweight
Hughes vs Serra: Hughes by KO Rd 2 (4:01)

Fight started off as you would expect, with some feeling out and traditional boxing. About a minute into the round Serra began to dominate Hughes with his striking and flushed a couple of Hughes take down attempts. Serra easily dominated the 1st round. During the 2nd round Hughes did get a couple of takedowns, but Serra limits any significant damage and sweeps Hughes for reversals. Later in the round Serra knocks Hughes down with a straight right, but Hughes recovers and is able to scramble to his feet. Serra moves back in smelling blood, but Hughes counters with a left hook on the button...Knockout!

Main Card - Lightweight
Sherk vs Edgar: Sherk by KO Rd 2 (2:45)

This fight goes as you might expect with two wrestlers, lots of takedowns and ground and pound. Boxing dominates the first couple of minutes of round 1, when Sherk decides to shoot in for the takedown, and he gets it. Sherk is significantly bigger than Edgar and controls him on the ground with ease, resulting in some devastating ground and pound. There are a couple of more takedowns in round 1 with the same outcome. Round 2 starts and Edgar is gassed from having to defend the constant ground and pound in round 1. Sherk takes down Edgar again and patiently works into the mount position and begins to unleash bombs to Edgar's face, with one making contact right on chin...goodnight, Knockout!

If the real thing is half as entertaining as these fights played out, we are in for one hell of a night of fights.

Ravage Fighter is Mixed Martial Arts

Ravage Fighter exists today for one simple reason...we are passionate about mixed martial arts and we want to help spread the word about the greatness of this sport. Even before the Ravage Fighter brand was born we would tell everybody that would listen how great MMA was, and why it was the most exciting sport on earth. As we became more involved in the sport through mixed martial arts training and aggressively followed the sport by attending live events and watching pay-per-views, we noticed that something was missing and slightly out of place. MMA has five main outlets for exposure; live events, television, magazines, internet, and third party affiliations, which are mostly apparel companies. Out of the five outlets, four of them are only speaking to hardcore and sometimes casual fans. Only the apparel outlet is in direct daily contact with the mainstream public as an ambassador for the sport of mixed martial arts.

It was this daily interaction with the mainstream that got us to thinking something has to change to further the growth and acceptance of the sport. In the current environment when you see a mixed martial arts shirt, more times than not it's morbid and bloody, and exhibits a very hostile and violent imagery. This imagery is more synonymous with biker gangs and heavy metal than it is with MMA, but perception is reality and if the mainstream public is constantly exposed to that imagery they will unfortunately accept it as fact.

Pound for Pound Argument Rages On

Last weekend both Fedor Emelianenko and Anderson Silva headlined competing events for Affliction and UFC respectively. Now that the battles are over, all be it less than a minute for both main events, the argument over who is the best pound for pound fighter is still raging.

Fedor, whom many consider to be the best pound for pound fighter, is a bit of an anomaly since the pound for pound designation is usually given to lighter weight fighters. His critics will claim he hasn't fought anyone tough, nor fought often enough, but with his victory over former UFC Heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in devastating fashion, that argument is all but mute. Fedor possesses a range skills more similar to a middle weight than a heavy weight. He is lightning fast with knockout power, and some of the best ground work in all of MMA. If Fedor fights Randy Couture later this year and wins, he will be considered the undisputed best pound for pound fighter in the world.

Anderson Silva is a more prototypical choice for the title best pound for pound fighter because he fights at a lower weight class. But this past weekend Anderson jumped up to Light Heavyweight to test himself in the most dominant division in all of MMA. It didn't take long for Anderson to prove his abilities against a bigger fighter in James Irvin, with a quick and brutal knockout. Anderson has run through everyone in the middle weight division and is now looking for new challenges in the light heavyweight arena. If Anderson is to claim the undisputed pound for pound title he will need to beat some of the top light heavyweights such Wanderlei Silva, Chuck Liddell, Rampage Jackson, and Forrest Griffin. This will be a tall task and a significant jump in competition, especially when Anderson is still attempting to defend his middle weight title.

The battle over who is the best pound for pound fighter is still not settled, but there is a clear path for each fighter to own this designation outright. Perhaps by the end of the year the argument will be settled once and for all, or at least until the next dominant fighter throws his hat in the ring.

Cote to Get Title Shot

According to Dana White, Patrick Cote earned a middle weight title shot against the winner of Anderson Silva vs Yushin Okami for his split decision win over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 86.

In what was possibly the most boring fight of the night, one has to wonder if Cote will have what it takes to defeat Silva (Yes, I'm already assuming Silva will destroy Okami). I don't believe that Cote has more than a puncher's chance against Silva, because Silva is just far superior at all aspects of mixed martial arts.

Cote claims he did not want to mix it up on the ground with a world class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner like Almeida. I suppose that's true, but Cote still needed to find a way to inflict damage and take the fight to Almeida. If Cote adopts the same style against Silva he will get picked apart by Silva's tactical striking and then he will get taken down and submitted.

The middle weight division is proving to be extremely weak, and I suppose this is one reason Silva wants to move to light heavyweight. I guess it's possible if Silva takes his eye off the prize in the middle weight division he could get beat by Cote, but I highly doubt it.

How Forrest Griffin Won the UFC Light Heavyweight Title

In case you missed the fight Saturday night at UFC 86, or you live in a cave, Forrest Griffin defeated Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in an epic five round battle to win the UFC Light Heavyweight Title. Forrest entered this fight as a heavy underdog and was given very little chance to win by most MMA analysts. So the question is, how did he do it?

The answer may surprise you, but it was really nothing more than developing a solid game plan and executing it to perfection. Forrest and his team correctly assessed Rampage's past performances and found an advantage they could exploit. That advantage was to strike from a distance with repeated combinations and leg kicks which prevented Rampage from closing the distance and utilizing his superior wrestling skills.

Rampage never looked comfortable during this fight because Forrest was repeatedly pressing forward and cutting off the cage. By cutting of the cage, Forrest effectively reduced the number of striking angles that Rampage could attempt to use and more or less nullified any take down opportunities.

One critical aspect of this fight that may go unnoticed is Forrest's amazing ability to take a punch. Rampage did connect with several hard shots, but none of them put Forrest in a precarious position that could have ended the fight. This amazing ability Forrest has to take more punishment that most fighters gives him a tremendous advantage in overcoming seemingly devastating strikes.

Forrest's victory proves that he has truly progressed as a fighter. No more are the days of the slug fests that made him a fan favorite from The Ultimate Fighter. Now Forrest relies on tactical precision striking, good ground work, and a well thought out game plan to win his fights. This new strategy could mean we see a long run at the top for Forrest Griffin.

Georges St. Pierre Nominated for an ESPY

Evidently, ESPN has yet to get the memo that mixed martial arts (MMA) has surpassed boxing as the world's premier combat sport. Make no mistake that this is a great honor for Georges St. Pierre to be nominated for an ESPY, but for him to be the only MMA representative in the five man (well...four men and one woman) category of "Best Fighter" is an absolute joke.

How it's possible that ESPN brainiacs in Bristol sat around and decided that there were four boxers that were better than MMA fighters like Quinton Jackson, Urijah Faber, BJ Penn, Anderson Silva, and others is beyond me. The only boxer listed that should even be considered is Floyd Mayweather and we all know he would get crushed by BJ Penn if they ever fought.

What we as fans of MMA need to do now is put our full support behind St. Pierre and vote as many times as possible and spread the word for others to do the same. Someday, ESPN will finally catch on that boxing is a dying sport and MMA is the future.

Oh, and you Bristol geniuses....the future is already here.

Affliction Presses Ahead with More Shows...Maybe

Last week Affliction Entertainment announced it is planning two more shows following its inaugural event on July 19. This latest information was dropped on the MMA community as a response to the UFC's announcement of a counter show on Spike TV on July 19.

The two future Affliction shows are tentatively scheduled for October and February 2009. No annoucnements were made regarding the fight cards, but Vice President, Tom Atencio acknowledged that the cards would most likely not be as star studded as the first event. Atencio also stated his desire to feature lower weight classes more prominently on future cards including feather weight (145 lbs), light weight (155 lbs), and welter weight (170 lbs).

Atencio also noted that Affliction would like to hold one of the shows on the west coast and to try and get the third show setup on the east coast, but nothing has been finalized as of yet.

This is a very ambitious step for Affliction considering they have only sold 8,000 tickets for the July 19 event at the Honda Center which has a capacity between 17k - 19k depending on the setup. The UFC has previously sold out the Honda Center multiple times as the State of California is a hotbed for MMA fans and fighters. Affliction's struggle to sell tickets for such an impressive card should give everyone pause as to whether or not they will be able to reach their pay-per-view goals and proceed with future fights.

This is particularly true given that word in MMA circles puts the fighter payouts between $4 - $6 million. Even if Affliction does sell out the arena, ticket revenue will not be enough to cover the fighters payouts. Affliction will have to rely on PPV buys to make up the difference and need much more to turn any kind of a profit on this event. The only MMA organization to ever record more than 100k PPV buys is the UFC, which frequently tops 500k buys. Pride Fighting Championships held two events in the USA in years past and those events combined only netted 60k PPV buys with one of them featuring Fedor Emelianenko.

Even in the most optimistic of scenarios it appears that Affliction is poised to run in the red ink on this event and that will seriously jeopardize its future success.

The Ultimate Fighter

A lot has been written lately about the success of The Ultimate Fighter and its overall effectiveness at promoting the sport of mixed martial arts after seven seasons. Contrary to some reports I believe that TUF is still extremely effective at promoting MMA and will continue to be successful provided the UFC makes sound decisions regarding the production.

The beauty of TUF is that it provides MMA fans (casual and hardcore) the ability to see fights each and every week through an entertaining prism similar to MTV's Real World (which started the whole reality TV craze). As a casual fan you can sit down and watch the show for its traditional reality TV plots of human drama and confrontation. You do not have to be heavily invested in each week's episode in order to stay engaged in the season. If you miss one week, it's not a big deal to come back the following week and pickup the show again.

For hardcore fans, TUF offers a much needed weekly fight in between PPV events or other offerings (non-rerun) on HD Net, NBC (Strikeforce), or other outlets. This weekly ritualistic viewing by hardcore fans allows the UFC to continually market new fighters and upcoming PPV events to a highly focused and segmented target market.

The only thing that can derail TUF is bad decisions by the UFC regarding talent and to a lesser extent coach selection. This leads me to a small concern about Season 8 because of the coach selection of Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. I think Mir will be fine, but I worry about Nogueira's ability to communicate effectively for a TV audience and if he will be entertaining enough. I don't get the sense there will be that much confrontation between Mir and Nogueira; and that battle is usually a significant plot line of the show.

At any rate, The Ultimate Fighter is far from having run its course and remains a highly effective vehicle for promoting MMA, and it's still a great show all by itself.

UFC 2009 Undisputed Video Game

The long awaited return of the UFC to the video game world is officially slated for Spring 2009 with the announcemnt by THQ of UFC 2009 Undisputed. This will be the first video game featuring the UFC since Zuffa bought the UFC back in 2001.

The UFC is looking for the new game to build on an already robust fan base within the video game market and judging from the initial game videos and screenshots it appears poised for success. The game will feature over 80 UFC fighters, all major fighting discipines, and a career mode that will allow players to rise through the MMA ranks.

According to several game analysts, the realism and individual style of all 80 plus UFC fighters has been expertly captured by the THQ development team. This unique individuality will allow the players to experience various fighting styles in a wide array of matchups. Just as is the case in real life, styles make fights, and the same will be true for this video game, which opens up a great deal of possibilities for players.

If this game follows through on its potential it will be a welcome addition to many fan's game libraries and nice way for fans to enjoy MMA and the UFC in between the next big event.

Marketing of Anderson Silva

If you've been paying attention to the UFC lately you will probably have noticed how much hype and publicity is being laid at the feet of Anderson Silva, UFC Middleweight Champion. Silva is well regarded throughout the MMA community and many people believe he is one of the top pound for pound fighters in the world (I certainly do...just check my pound for pound rankings).

However, with that being said I find it quite ironic that all this discussion regarding Silva has just recently cropped up about the same time as the first Affliction pay-per-view featuring Fedor Emelianenko. Fedor is the MMA fighter that most fans regard as the best pound for pound fighter. It appears that the UFC is trying to shift attention away from the world's best fighter that they cannot seem to get signed to a contract and thus promote their own best fighter.

I believe there is a good debate that could be had arguing over who really is the best pound for pound fighter, Fedor or Silva, but the UFC's rational behind promoting Silva is strictly for monetary reasons. See my previous post regarding the announcement of the free Fight Night on Spike TV featuring Anderson Silva on the same night as the Affliction PPV.

The UFC is marketing Anderson Silva in strange places, such as the Guys Choice Awards on Spike TV this past weekend. Anderson was somehow positioned in a category for Most Dangerous Man against Wladimir Klitschko (boxer) and won the award. Unfortunately, Anderson does not speak much English so he acceptance speech was in Portuguese, which was later translated to English for the audience. If the UFC's main goal is to offset the Fedor and Affliction momentum then the current strategy might actually work. However, if the UFC is trying to promote Silva as the next face of the UFC (previously/currently held by Chuck Liddell) then it is imperative that Anderson Silva learn English and interact more frequently with the MMA fan base. Otherwise, he will not endear himself to the casual MMA fan and be the PPV draw that the UFC would needs and wants.

Stay tuned to see if Anderson Silva continues to be promoted heavily by the UFC after the Affliction PPV event. If so, then perhaps he will be the new poster boy for the UFC.

Affliction vs UFC

Well, it appears as though Dana White and the UFC will not just sit idly by and let anyone take a run their supremacy. Last week the UFC announced that it will be airing a fight on Spike TV the same day as the Affliction: Banned pay-per-view event, Saturday, July 19.

Affliction has put a lot of money and effort into creating a blockbuster show headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs Tim Sylvia. In the process of building an excellent under card and partnering with Donald Trump, Affliction appeared poised to position itself as a legitimate organization for MMA. However, rumor has it that Affliction is in need of at least 250k PPV buys to cover the initial start-up costs of the organization and to continue building for future events.

With the UFC's announcement of a free Fight Night on Spike TV any possibility of 250k PPV buys has all but gone out the window. I suspect this will now greatly alter Affliction's strategy going forward as it attempts to become a top 2 - 3 organization for MMA.

Love him or hate him, you must give Dana White credit for being a savvy businessman and for protecting his turf from the competition. After the dust settles it will be interesting to see just how well Affliction performs in this most difficult of situations, head-to-head against the UFC.

O'Reilly Disrespects MMA

I watch the O'Reilly Factor frequently, and most of the time the reporting and tackling of tough issues is honest and straight forward. However, I must take issue with the portrayal of mixed martial arts on CBS. Mixed martial arts is a lifestyle steeped in traditions like honor, integrity, discipline, and other positive characteristics.

The athletes participating in this sport are not a bunch of bar room drunks or guys off the street. These are people who have dedicated their lives to training and learning the age old techniques and skills of the martial arts for competition. These same athletes that engage in physical combat in the ring respect each other a great deal, stay out of trouble, and are very good role models, in a world where most professional athletes are not.

Normally the fact checking is very good, but O'Reilly and his guests (Bernie and Jane) grossly misrepresented the sport of mixed martial arts. The major networks have previously aired boxing matches with blood and bodily injury, and numerous scientific evidence exists to support the fact that mixed martial arts is far safer than boxing. Boxers face a much greater risk of brain damage and head trauma due to repeated punches to the head from the heavier padded gloves. Mixed martial artist can avoid repeated punches to the head by utilizing the skills of ground fighting. Also, if they do get hit it the head resulting in a knockout, it occurs from receiving fewer damaging punches from the lighter gloves.

O'Reilly's opinion against airing mixed martial arts on national television networks is perfectly fine if that's what he believes, but the inaccuracy and misrepresentation of the sport is what bothers me. Bernie and Jane's contention that the audience of this program would just as soon witness an execution or death in the ring is totally irresponsible and flat out sorry. As a fan, I do not have a "blood lust" and my interest in the sport stems from the challenge of one on one competition and the immense dedication to training and preparation that these athletes must endure.

I would like to see you acknowledge the true facts about the sport of mixed martial arts. Perhaps O'Reilly could invite well respected MMA participants like Randy Couture, Frank Shamrock, Pat Militech or countless others on his show to explain the sport accurately.
